Medication non-compliance is significant contributor to morbidity and mortality amongst medical patients. Remote Therapeutic Monitoring (RTM) aims to combat this through use of digitally connected pill boxes, enabling medical practices to ascertain levels of medication compliance amongst their patients.
RTM is also a powerful tool used by Medical Assistants engaging patients in Chronic Care Management (CCM) as part of your overall remote patient monitoring program, recognizing the importance of medication compliance in patients recovering from acute illness and in optimizing management of chronic medical conditions.
CMS will pay for RTM services using CPT codes 98978, 98980, 98981. These can be billed concurrently with CPT codes for CCM, however, at this time CMS will not pay for Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) as well. It will therefore be up to your remote monitoring vendor to determine which suite of services (e.g. RTM+CCM vs. RPM+CCM) best suit your patients’ needs.
In summary RTM is a powerful tool to help improve medication compliance and generate additional practice revenue, while empowering clinicians to move from assumption-based treatment to data-driven care.
